Dr. Sylvia Earle joining Baja California Expedition
We’re thrilled to announce that world-renowned marine conservationist, biologist, oceanographer and explorer, Dr. Sylvia Earle, will be a special guest on an adventurous and immersive 9 day expedition in 2022 to explore Baja California and the Sea of Cortez – famously dubbed the ‘aquarium of the world’.
The abundance of marine life is so extraordinary that even the enormous blue whale makes a pit stop in spring to refuel at this UNESCO World Heritage Site! Dr. Earle will join us on the exploration of this incredibly biodiverse region on board our new small expedition ship, the Sylvia Earle, named to honor Dr. Earle’s long-standing ocean conservation efforts.
Dr. Earle has a deep personal connection to the Sea of Cortez, as it was nominated as the first ‘Hope Spot’ by Mission Blue – her own conservation alliance – which has created a global network of 136 marine protected areas to date. Aurora Expeditions, the new Sylvia Earle ship and expeditioners will support Mission Blue’s efforts with wildlife mapping, location photography and video and supporting marine research through ‘Citizen Science’.
“By traveling with Aurora Expeditions on the Sylvia Earle, I feel it is an incredible opportunity for people to learn about these extraordinary marine habitats in situ, and as a result, become ambassadors for protecting them.Dr. Sylvia Earle

Introducing the Sylvia Earle
Due to sail in October 2021 Aurora Expeditions’ new ship honors the highly accomplished marine biologist, oceanographer and explorer, Sylvia Earle. As the first female chief scientist of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and named by Time Magazine as its first Hero for the Planet in 1998 – this vessel pays tribute to Sylvia’s long-standing conservation efforts for marine protected areas and ocean wildlife.
