Aptly named “The River of Kings,” Europe’s second-longest river originates in Germany’s Black Forest and flows through 10 countries into the Black Sea. Daily life, past and present, is chronicled along its banks, taking shape in grand cities and medieval towns where local food, architecture, and cultural vestiges tell tales of kings and their courts, the conquerors, all that once was. And served as the inspiration for quite possibly the greatest waltz of all.
Romance thrives along the River Rhine, flowing with a mighty rhythm for some 800 miles, where each turn in the bend comes with a story. 1,000 years of history are found in its 40 hilltop medieval castles and fortresses alongside valleys where ancient terraced vineyards thrive. And for a unique view of The Netherlands’ cultural landscape along its historic inland waterways, welcome to our newest Rhine river cruise, Cruising the Dutch Waterways.
The Seine and the Rhône
Three rivers and seven cruises explore some of the world’s favorite culinary experiences and secrets of the vineyards, forever intertwined with some of history’s greatest tales. Sailing the rivers Seine, Rhône, and Saône, emanating north and south from the cultural center of Paris, artisans create haute and nouvelle cuisine – and the business of wine, from Burgundy to Beaujolais to Châteauneuf-du-Pape, has been an art for thousands of years.
Tauck River Cruising, 2022, brings over 25 all-inclusive river cruises on the Danube, Rhine, Rhône, Seine, and Douro rivers, including holiday cruises on the Danube & Rhine, family cruises for multigenerational fun – and two special once-in-a-decade experiences, the Passion Play at Oberammergau and Floriade, a horticultural showcase on select Rhine river cruises.
Tauck’s custom-built river fleet is designed for fewer passengers and more personal space than comparative, same-sized riverboats. Half of their fleet are 49 cabins or less and their maximum size is just 67 cabins; larger, more spacious cabins, fewer crowds, and more personalized service. All shore excursions – unique and exclusive access with a difference – are included in one upfront price, along with just about every travel expense.
2022 marks two exclusive, once-in-a-decade events featured on select river cruises: Oberammergau, where the Passionsspiele (the Passion Play), is performed in the Bavarian village of the same name – and Floriade Expo 2022, the Netherland’s “world’s fair” of horticultural exhibitions. Departure dates and availability is limited.
